What is a fragrance pyramid?
Every perfume is built in layers that unfold over time on your skin. The fragrance pyramid has three levels: top notes (first impression), heart notes (main character), and base notes (long-lasting foundation). Understanding this helps you buy smarter online.
Top notes (0–15 minutes)
Top notes are what you smell immediately after spraying — often citrus, bergamot, apple, or light florals. They evaporate fastest. Do not judge a perfume only by the first spray; wait 15–30 minutes for the true scent.
- Common top notes: lemon, bergamot, pink pepper, green apple, mint.
- Feel: Fresh, bright, inviting.
Heart notes (20 minutes – 4 hours)
Heart notes form the core identity of the fragrance — rose, jasmine, cinnamon, or marine accords. This is the stage where you decide if you truly love a scent.
- Common heart notes: rose, jasmine, lavender, geranium, spices.
- Feel: Floral, spicy, or aromatic — the 'story' of the perfume.
Base notes (4–12+ hours)
Base notes anchor the perfume and provide longevity — vanilla, musk, sandalwood, amber, oud, and patchouli. If a scent lasts all day, thank the base notes.
When reading Scentico product pages, check base notes first if longevity is your priority.
